Welcome To Plant Based Kidneys®!
Michele Crosmer, RD, CSR
I’m a Registered Dietitian and Certified Specialist in Renal Nutrition.
I love cooking & tailoring recipes to meet the unique nutrient needs of people with kidney disease.
I became interested in renal nutrition when my grandfather (who had CKD Stage 3) started having high blood potassium levels. He was given outdated/generic handouts on what NOT to eat without being asked what he was currently eating. He was also never referred to a renal dietitian or given guidance on what he CAN eat.
My goal is to help you feel more confident in what you CAN and SHOULD eat for your kidney health.
Plant Based Kidneys
Plant Based
Minimally processed, focus on plants (vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains), limit/avoid animal products (meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy), and exclude ultra processed food.
Low Sodium
Excessive sodium intake can increase blood pressure and cause extra sodium and fluid to build up in your body. All recipes are low sodium and mostly utilize naturally salt free herbs and spices.
Reduced Protein
Protein requirements vary depending on stage of CKD and each person’s individual needs. However, since excessive protein intake and animal protein intake cause the kidneys to work harder, all recipes use plant protein sources and contain low-moderate protein levels.
Controlled Potassium
Potassium needs are highly individualized. Some people have higher needs and some need to restrict intake. For this reason, Plant Based Kidneys recipes mostly utilize lower-moderate potassium fruits and vegetables and typically contain moderate levels of potassium.
Note on Phosphorus: phosphorus is not well absorbed when it comes from plants (whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds, etc) compared to animal products and phosphorus additives. Since all recipes are plant based phosphorus content is not a major concern.
Your Kidney Nutrition Expert
With a family history of Chronic Kidney Disease and many formed friendships with clients over the years, I see first-hand the burden, confusion, and discouragement that comes along with a diagnosis of CKD.
Plant Based Kidneys® is not about being 100% plant based or vegan. This is not an all or nothing diet!
I’m here to provide hope & encouragement and a way to eat that is tasty, sustainable, AND helps protect your kidneys long term.
